Locasting 101: the definition
Locasting is directing content to a user based on location.
The world is connected as never before. We have virtual communities and friends spread across the globe. Along the way, something was lost. New media has not yet focused on the world we see every day - the place we live. Locasting has arrived to fill that void. As more and more video and audio become tagged with location, locasting will become more and more common.
Local radio and television programming is locasting.
It was called Broadcasting when it was difficult for radio to travel beyond the horizon. Now radio seems quaint and limited. Yet, we all listen when we want to know local weather, news and traffic.
Locally focused podcasting is locasting.
A locally known podcast or video source that you subscribe to is also locasting. We need better ways to find these feeds, and that's one reason why the Locasting Directory is here.
Locally targeted streaming media is locasting.
Streaming audio or video that both contains local content and is subscribed to based on location is locasting. Streaming has the same advantages of local radio and television, without the static and real-time limitation. Streaming also brings our local radio programming to our smart phones.
Location-aware gaming and social networking are locasting.
Mobile apps that build local social networks (dating, games, etc) create ad-hoc locasting networks. When these apps realize what they have, you'll see more apps that use the gaming platforms and location-aware social networks to locast content.
What's next?
Here are some of the things we'd like to see soon:
Location-aware clients - we want podcast and streaming clients to use location when we want local content.
Geotagging of podcasts - it's high time that this becomes a podcasting requirement
Microtagging - often, a streaming or podcast program contains a segment about somewhere in particular. We need podcasters to provide geotags and for clients to select content.
Easy locast content generation - simpler apps to record content, geotag, upload and distribute with little or no hassle.
